What are Web 2.0 tools?
"Web 2.0 represents an important shift in the way digital information is created, shared, stored, distributed, and manipulated. In the years ahead, it will have a significant impact in the way businesses use both the Internet and enterprise-level IT applications." "As the name suggests, Web 2.0 describes a set of next-generation Internet technologies. These protocols and tools make it easier to create online applications that behave dynamically, much like traditional PC-based software. They're also highly social, encouraging users to manipulate and interact with content in new ways. As a general rule, Web 2.0 tools are also less expensive than traditional software — and many are even free. Because they're Web-based, all you need to get started is an up-to-date browser." -Wolcott. MoneyWatch. 2007 Here is some advice that I received last year - Teach the common core curriculum not the new web 2.0 tool that you think would make a splash in the classroom. If it fits into what you're doing and can be used to get higher up the Blooms ladder, then it's worth the investment of time. |
Many of our students already have e-mail accounts, whether it's through g-mail, Road Runner or some other option. With this said, many do not have e-mail accounts because parents don't feel comfortable with their child having access to this freedom in an unsecured environment. Gaggle is a safe e-mail option that I piloted for our district last year. Teachers have access to all material because they are the administrator. In addition, any inappropriate material that is sent by or to a Gaggle account user will send up a red flag to the Gaggle team. These red flags will initiate a message from the team to the teacher.
It also provides students with digital lockers where work can be saved and submitted, a chat room, and access to teacher texts if important reminders need to be sent. Remember, many web 2.0 tools need e-mail accounts and Gaggle would be an excellent account to use for this reason. |
